How to Brew – French Press

Here’s a step-by-step guide to making coffee with a French Press.

What You'll Need

  • French press
  • Coffee beans (or pre-ground coffee)
  • Burr grinder (if using whole beans)
  • Kettle (for boiling water)
  • Digital scale (optional, for precise measurements)
  • Timer

Instructions

Step 1: Measure Coffee

  • Use a coffee-to-water ratio of about **1:15 to 1:17** (e.g., 1 gram of coffee for every 15–17 grams of water).
  • For a standard 8-cup French press (1 liter), use about **55 grams of coffee** and **900 grams (ml) of water**.

Step 2: Grind Coffee

  • Grind your beans to a **coarse consistency**, resembling breadcrumbs.
  • Avoid fine grounds, as they can seep through the mesh filter.

Step 3: Boil Water

  • Heat water to around **195–205°F** (just below boiling). If you don’t have a thermometer, bring the water to a boil, then let it sit for 30 seconds.

Step 4: Preheat the French Press

  • Pour hot water into the French press to warm it up, then discard the water.

Step 5: Add Coffee Grounds

  • Place the measured coffee grounds into the empty, preheated French press.

Step 6: Pour Water

  • Start a timer. Pour about **half the water** over the grounds in a circular motion to saturate them evenly.
  • Let the coffee bloom (bubble and release gases) for **30–45 seconds**.

Step 7: Add Remaining Water

  • Pour the rest of the water to reach the desired level.
  • Stir gently with a wooden spoon or stirrer to ensure all grounds are wet.

Step 8: Steep

  • Place the lid on the French press with the plunger pulled up. Let the coffee steep for **4 minutes**.

Step 9: Press the Plunger

  • Slowly press the plunger down with steady pressure.

Step 10: Serve Immediately

  • Pour the coffee into cups or a carafe to avoid over-extraction.

Step 11: Tips for the Best French Press Coffee

  • Use freshly roasted, high-quality coffee beans.
  • Adjust the grind size or brewing time if the coffee tastes too bitter (use coarser grounds) or too weak (use finer grounds).
  • Clean your French press thoroughly after each use to avoid stale flavors.
